Varied menu item background colour?

    I have a client who would like each menu item to have a different background colour. I wonder if it’s possible to use each individual menu item’s allocated class (e.g. li.menu-item-44) and set it with a different colour in the child theme’s style.css. I’ve tried it but it has no effect. Is it possible some other way?
