Hi. It’s difficult for people to read a line of text online or in print that is more than 70 characters wide (this is just a standard rule of thumb). Some people might debate this, but I believe it’s true.

My issue is that the line width for my blog posts goes much wider and I’d like to make it narrower, but just for the blog posts, not the other pages.

When I switch the page template to one that includes a sidebar, my posts do not show up on that.

So, I need to do one of two things:

1. Figure out how to make the posts show up on a template page that is not the Blog Template (posts page) default
2. Change the line width for just that page template within my site.

I can do this with basic HTML if I want to put each post into a table, but I’m not really keen on that.

You can use the non-sidebar template for pages and set the layout to always have sidebar (to make this apply to category/posts pages), or enable the Magazine Layout setting (under Post Excerpts Settings)

Neither will work. I don’t want side bars on any other page, and I’ve used HTML tables to control width in those pages (it’s a display site with lots of graphics).

I can’t use HTML tables on the posts page, and while the magazine layout is great for preview, the issue is back again when you click on the articles to read them.

I suppose I can set each article in a table (haven’t tried), but was hoping since every other text and line manipulation was available, width might also be.

I’d also love to be able to get a banner on top of the posts page, but can’t seem to manage that, either.

C. Stevenson, I am having the same issue as you where I like the width of my presentation page, but would very much like to limit the width of the individual blog posts. Can you please explain how you managed to do this?

Hi D. I actually wrote a small article on it, but felt it was a bit presumptuous of me so didn’t post it.

The blog (the page your posts default to and show up on) is the ruler of the site, not the presentation page, so keep that in mind.

So, what I did is choose the layout I wanted for that blog page, which was a column with a right hand sidebar. That gave me both my sidebar with a list of posts, links, etc.. and a much narrower column for my blog articles.

Then I went in and changed the other pages individually to One Column no sidebar in the edit mode under Page Attributes on the right.

I was unable to then use the magazine layout for the posts preview page and I was also not able to use Category Page with Intro under the Page Attributes, without creating new issues. But, that might be because of something else I had done, I’m not sure.

The magazine layout applies to all category sections (everywhere where posts are listed). We are working to turn this into a page template so it can be used on selected categories/sections.
