Having trouble with Presentation Page Columns

I am working on a website (http://responsive.uucm.org/), and in particular trying to set up the Presentations Page.

I’ve set up my theme as a child theme of Nirvana. I can provide the necessary files I used to set that up, if you need them.

I’ve managed to set up the first text area, although I really would like that to be divided into three elements (like I’ve set up on the http://responsive.uucm.org/welcome/ page — using SiteOrigin Site Builder). Not being able to use a sidebar here makes what I want to do difficult.

So, I decided to try setting up the columns section. I read the https://www.cryoutcreations.eu/wordpress-themes/wordpress-tutorials/how-to-use-the-new-tempera-presentation-page-columns tutorial, and tried to set up some columns using “Widget Columns”, and then dragging Cryout Column widgets to the Presentation Page Columns. Whatever I entered, no columns showed up. Nothing. I removed the Cryout Columns from the Presentation Page Columns, and then tried to use the ability to display specific posts by ID. I created three posts that reproduce parts of my above Welcome page, and entered the IDs in a comma-separated list. Again, no columns displayed at all. When I returned to the “Widget Columns” option, the original, demo columns reappeared. But I cannot for the life of me cause my own columns to display. What am I missing?

I then decided to enable the display of posts in the Presentation Page, using those posts I’d added. I find that they are displayed below the section that proudly announces “There will be Posts”. I expected them to replace that section. This I found strange.

I’d really appreciate some help/advice here.

Is it possible that I have set up the child theme incorrectly? I briefly switched back to using Nirvana directly, but it seemed to make no difference, other than losing some of the formatting I’d set up. The columns still didn’t show up.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Incidentally, I did not supply any images for the columns, as I did not have a use for that feature.

Could it be that images are required for columns? If so, that would be a rather strange requirement.

The images are indeed required for the columns (this is, in fact, the only required attribute for the columns to appear). The columns are not designed to work without images.

The order of elements on the presentation page in Nirvana is:

    • slider
    • first text area
    • columns
    • second text area
    • posts
    • third text area

No section replaces another, they are either visible (with content) or disabled.

I find the decision to require images in the columns to be a rather strange one, as it severely limits what I can do with them. I could use a light background image, but based on what I see when you view the columns on a small screen, the text is moved down below the image, so that would make things look quite strange.

While viewing [typically light] text on top of an image might look artistic, that would not be my choice for what I want to do. I’m more interested in presenting content. My old eyes aren’t too happy with light text on dark or busy backgrounds, either.

Can you give me a feel for what you think columns might be used for, given this image restriction? Other suggestions?
