I’m using a plugin that shows a category icon beside post titles. I’ve edited the content template so they show on the category and archive pages, but I can’t get them to show on the front page. Which template do I need to edit to modify the front page, please?

All parts of the theme use the content/content*.php files to render individual items of content.
The archive and category sections make use of those files.

Okay, I’ve edited that file already, but the edits don’t show on the front page.

Did you modify both instances of entry-summary in content.php?
