The demo shows a right sidebar on the blog page:

The only template for blog pages in my theme is full width.

How do I get the side bar to display?

All of the site’s sections (including the blog) will use the theme’s general Layout option (as configured in the settings). Static pages can have a different layout page template assigned to display different sidebars.

Seriously? To have a sidebar in my blog I have to also have a sidebar in my home page?

If your homepage is a static page then it can use a different layout page template.
If it’s a posts list then it is basically a posts archive just like the blog – why should the two archives be different layouts?
