When I add product photos as a Media file and they are clicked on the screen is black and there is no back button. I know I can link to an attachment page to get that however I would like to avoid doing this.

Is there anyway to add a back button on the page?

That is how browsers handle file display and it cannot be customized by the site in any way.
You may want to look into using a Fancybox/Colorbox/Lightbox plugin for images.
